Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • Red food coloring gel, amount as needed
  • Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the sifted flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with sugar until fluffy and pale, about 3-4 minutes with an electric mixer or 6-7 minutes by hand.
  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well blended.
  • Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined; dough should be smooth but firm.
  • Divide dough in half. Leave one half plain; knead red food coloring gel into the other half until evenly colored.
  • Roll each half into 12 inch logs. Wrap one red and one white dough log together tightly in plastic wrap. Chill for at least 30 minutes.
  • Slice the combined dough roll into ¼-inch thick slices. Lay slices on prepared baking sheets, spacing 1 inch apart.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges start to brown.
  • Cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
